Breast Cancer Sucks. This Advice Does Not.
Breast cancer sucks. Like most cancers, breast cancer may be caused by exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals, in addition to a family history that passed on inherited genes. Although a devastating illness, the negative effects of breast cancer can be curbed if detected early and proper medical attention such as breast cancer treatment is implemented. To that end, read the following advice to deal with, or help prevent, this sucky illness.
- Learn as much about breast cancer as possible when you are diagnosed with it. Seek out breast cancer facts and see that there are things that can be done to make the symptoms more manageable at times, but you need to take the prerogative to learn what they are and incorporate them into your life.
- Filter any tap water that you plan on consuming. Tap water may contain many carcinogens, such as arsenic. A carbon filter attached to the faucet or a filter pitcher can remove these carcinogens from the water before you consume them, leaving you healthy.
- Learn about the side effects of your cancer treatment, so you can be prepared for the physical effects you may experience. Your oncologist can give you a summary of what may happen when you undergo cancer treatment. Your hair and complexion might change: think about wearing makeup and getting a wig.
- If you have breast cancer or if someone you love has the disease, one of the first things you should do is work to deal with your own feelings on the matter. Do not allow for any negative feelings to bleed over into someone else’s life. Face those fears head on and work on keeping those emotions at bay.
- Try limiting fat in your diet. By decreasing the amount of fat, you will lower your cancer risk. Avoid frying, especially deep frying. There are alternatives to frying such as baking, roasting, broiling, and steaming. Try to buy the low or non fat versions of your favorite foods, like milk and yogurt.
- Research shows that breast cancer survivors who eat diets high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, chicken, and fish tend to live longer than those who eat diets that have more refined sugars, fats, red meats (such as beef, pork, and lamb), and processed meats (such as bacon, sausage, luncheon meats, and hot dogs.) – via Cancer.org
- The American Cancer Society recommends that you eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables each and every day as a way of cutting the risk of getting cancer. The nutritional value of these foods will ensure that your immune system remains in top condition and ready to fight off foreign cells if required.
- Limit your alcohol consumption to protect yourself from cancer. Heavy amounts of alcohol can lead to deadly liver and/or stomach cancer. Alcohol can also have a damaging effect on your skin and many other essential organs. Limit your consumption to no more than one glass of beer or wine daily for optimum health benefits.
